How do you keep semaglutide cool in a Virginia summer?
Store compounded semaglutide the way your prescription label says, usually in the fridge at 36°F to 46°F, and get the box inside fast. Wegovy’s rule for pens kept at 46°F to 86°F for up to 28 days doesn’t apply to compounded vials. On hot days, be home for delivery or pick a shaded drop-off spot, and get the box into the fridge right away. In a disaster, virginia’s refill law sets no day limit. If your prescriber can’t be reached and your health would be in imminent danger without the drug, a pharmacist may refill it without approval, even using only your container’s label. The pharmacist must tell you and your prescriber. (Code of Virginia) More: how to store compounded semaglutide.

How many units is your semaglutide dose?
It depends on your vial’s strength. Here are the Wegovy label’s dose steps at two example strengths, with the math to check your own.
| Weeks | Weekly dose | At 2.5 mg/mL | At 5 mg/mL |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 0.25 mg | 0.1 mL (10 units) | 0.05 mL (5 units) |
| 5 to 8 | 0.5 mg | 0.2 mL (20 units) | 0.1 mL (10 units) |
| 9 to 12 | 1 mg | 0.4 mL (40 units) | 0.2 mL (20 units) |
| 13 to 16 | 1.7 mg | 0.68 mL (68 units) | 0.34 mL (34 units) |
| 17 onward | 2.4 mg | 0.96 mL (96 units) | 0.48 mL (48 units) |
The math: mL = dose ÷ strength (mg per mL), and units = mL × 100. At 2.5 mg/mL, 1 mg is 1 ÷ 2.5 = 0.4 mL, or 40 units. At 5 mg/mL, the same 1 mg is 0.2 mL, or 20 units.
Both strengths are examples only. The same dose is a different number of units at a different strength, so read the strength on your own vial’s label. Your prescription sets your dose and schedule, which may differ from these label steps. Every step: the semaglutide dosage chart.

Wegovy tablets also need a medical reason injections won’t work, or two failed injectables.
Do Virginia state employee plans cover Wegovy?
They cover weight-loss GLP-1s only with prior authorization and, since July 1, 2026, a BMI of 35 or higher for new approvals. COVA Care, HealthAware and HDHP switched to a new drug list on July 1, 2026, so check Wegovy’s status before you fill.
Is compounded semaglutide legal in Virginia?
It can be, within limits. Virginia lets pharmacists compound for a specific patient with a valid prescription under USP standards, but bars regular compounding of copies of commercially available drugs unless the prescriber orders a change for that patient. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved; FDA declared the semaglutide shortage resolved February 21, 2025.
Do I need a Virginia-licensed prescriber for semaglutide?
Yes. A prescriber must be licensed in Virginia to treat you while you’re in Virginia, and state law requires an active Virginia license to start care online. Virginia’s official compact list doesn’t include the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. You can verify any prescriber’s license on the state’s License Lookup.
Can an out-of-state pharmacy mail compounded semaglutide to Virginia?
Yes, if it is registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a nonresident pharmacy. It must name a pharmacist-in-charge licensed in Virginia, send a current inspection report showing USP compliance, and notify the Board before shipping sterile compounded drugs. Unregistered out-of-state pharmacies may not ship compounded sterile products into Virginia.
How do I keep semaglutide cold in Virginia heat?
Expect long hot stretches. In summer 2026, Norfolk reached 86°F or more on 68 days and Lynchburg on 72, and Roanoke hit 100°F three days in a row in early July. Don’t leave packages on a porch or in a car, and store your medicine the way your pharmacy’s label says.
How much does compounded semaglutide cost in Virginia?
Online, compounded semaglutide costs $119 to $299 a month, all in, with a median of $199 (GLP-1 price index, checked November 1, 2026). Brand Wegovy pens cost $199 for each of a new patient’s first two fills (through Dec. 31, 2026) at NovoCare Pharmacy, then $349 a month ($399 at 7.2 mg). The Wegovy pill runs $149 to $299.
Does Medicare cover Wegovy in Virginia?
Yes, for eligible Part D enrollees through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge: $50 a month with prior authorization, July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027. It covers Wegovy injections and tablets. You need a qualifying BMI and must not have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea or fatty liver disease, which your plan may already cover.
Where can I get semaglutide in Virginia Beach or Norfolk?
You need a prescriber licensed in Virginia, whether you’re in Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Chesapeake, and you can get care online. The prescription must be filled by a pharmacy licensed or registered by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Compounded semaglutide is made for you by prescription. Check licenses on Virginia’s License Lookup.

Important safety information
Compounded tirzepatide and semaglutide are not FDA-approved, and the FDA hasn’t reviewed them for safety, effectiveness or quality. A provider prescribes them only when they offer a significant difference for you compared with an FDA-approved product.
Both medicines may cause thyroid tumors, including cancer: don’t use either if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Read the full safety information
In studies with rodents, both medicines caused thyroid tumors; it isn’t known whether they cause them in people. Tell your provider if you notice a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath. Serious side effects can include inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or sulfonylureas), kidney problems from dehydration, severe stomach problems, serious allergic reactions, vision changes in people with type 2 diabetes, and a faster heart rate. Tell your care team before any surgery or procedure that uses anesthesia or deep sedation. Don’t combine either medicine with other GLP-1 medicines.
Tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after you start and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Both medicines may harm an unborn baby. Semaglutide should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Tell your provider right away if you’re pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding.
This is a summary, not the complete safety information. Read the full Prescribing Information for FDA-approved tirzepatide (Zepbound) and semaglutide (Wegovy), and talk with your provider. You can report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or fda.gov/medwatch.

How we checked. On Nov. 1, 2026, we read each program’s public pages (no quiz, account or checkout); on Nov. 2, 2026, we read Virginia’s Medicaid, licensing, telehealth and pharmacy rules at their sources. The heat counts are ours, from NOAA’s daily station data at 9 weather stations.
How we make money. We earn revenue when people join NexLife, one of the programs here, so we name the catch for every option, ours included.
